Drive 2007 - Day 02

This was what I woke up to see (well, the visible-light version at least):

The sea was misty, and I spent most of the morning driving above it.

In northern California, I reached Redwood National Park. For those who haven't seen a giant redwood forest, I would highly recommend visiting this one - even if (like me) you grew up in an area with a lot of trees. The size of these is incredible, and I imagine for someone from an area without big forests it would be even more amazing.

If you are a Star Wars fan and these trees look familiar, it's because the Endor scenes for Return of the Jedi were shot in a nearby (non-National Park) part of this forest.

This is my favourite of the "looking up at the redwoods" variety of photo, because the variations across the spectrum are so surprising. The second tinted NIR version was taken using a Hoya R72 filter instead of the higher-cutoff NIR filters that I normally use.

My favourite picture of the day is this shot of a fallen tree. Like most of this forest, there are a lot of interesting changes across the spectrum, but they show up best in this photo (particularly the G-B-UVA variation). The "Accidental Colour" version came about when I did one step wrong processing the photo, but I liked the way it looked.

I kept expecting to see a pair of speeder bikes fly through here. This shot is a good example of the strange artifacts that shooting a multispectral sequence over time can cause as the shadows shift around.

After leaving the National Park, I continued along 101, ending up above the clouds for awhile. 101 in California was the most fun I've ever had driving while keeping to the speed limit. Its designer(s) must have loved to drive, because it's an endless parade of hills and perfectly-banked curves. My impression of California drivers is that they're generally really good on the straightaway, but most of them slow way down for curves. I grew up driving in a rural area with a lot of ups and downs, so several times I ended up playing leapfrog with the natives; they would pass me on the straightaways, and I would pass them a minute later (still keeping to the speed limit) on the curvy bits.

A few shots I did handheld (and therefore visible-light only) at a lookout point high above the ocean. The cloud layer was well below the lookout when I was there.

By sundown I was just north of San Francisco along 101. I was concerned about reaching LA as soon as I'd hoped, so I cut over to I5. Some day I would definitely like to see the piece of 101 in-between the Bay Area and LA, just based on how great the rest of it is.
