Street Trash
My friend Raw Garbage had a plan to appear in the 2012 Fremont Solstice Parade. Unfortunately, he discovered at the last minute that they don't allow anyone in the parade with words on their float or costumes[1]. This restriction is incompatible with his style of art, so the plan was changed to simply appear on the sidelines and then wander through the post-parade festival - described by a FAC member as "a carnival of ideas and social network, ecology, and activism messaged through art and art activities". Look at that custom-painted dumpster[2]. It's "a carnival of ideas and social network, ecology, and activism messaged through art and art activities" all by itself!

One of my favourite aspects of being a part of this was seeing the various reactions people had to the art.

1. | The Fremont Arts Council claims that this policy is primarily to prevent commercial advertising. I think the real reason is that when hippies get old, they tend to be less interested in free thought and expression (which by their very nature involve controvery and disagreement) and more interested in forcing everyone to get along, even if it means crushing them under their jack-sandaled heels. How does it feel to become the very thing you used to hate, old hippies? Is it a pit of despair that sears your soul and withers your spirit? Will it haunt you until the end of your days, festering in your heart and poisoning your dreams? Don't wait for the translation! Answer me now!! |
