Drive 2010 - Day 2
I'd never heard of Big Bend National Park until my trip to Yellowstone in 2009[1]. I ran into an older couple there who said that Big Bend was the only place they'd been to as amazing as Yellowstone. When I got home from that trip, I started looking up pictures, and thought I understood what they meant.
Big Bend is fairly remote - the nearest US towns are Marathon, 69 miles north, and Alpine, 100 miles north. It is on the US/Mexico border (the Rio Grande is the southern boundary of the park), and there are small Mexican settlements on the other side, but oddly they do not seem to appear on either Bing or Google Maps. Crossing the border at Big Bend is not permitted, and when exiting the park, be prepared for at least one conversation with the US Border Patrol.
When I first entered the park, this is the sort of scenery I saw, and at that time I still thought I understood what the couple at Yellowstone had meant.

It wasn't until I saw the Chisos Mountains that I actually became aware of why Big Bend is famous. It's as if every real or imagined Old West setting has been wrapped up into a single place. I suspect that there are other areas like this in Mexico (it's easy to picture Mayan or Aztec ruins sitting in the Chisos Mountains), but in the US, it is unique.

One of the most amazing things I discovered on my first day was that there is a full campground right in the middle of the Chisos mountains. In most of the nature preserves I've visited, the campgrounds are well removed from the main attractions, and only backcountry campers are able to sleep in the best areas. Here, anyone can set up camp with a ring of stunning mountains surrounding them on all sides, seemingly close enough to touch.
I was quite surprised at how few people were in the park during my visit. I learned later on that visitors are much more common in March, when all of the desert flowers are in bloom. Apparently it was unseasonably humid while I was there, which is why the plants were such a bright green, but I imagine that Big Bend is a sight not to be missed at any time of year.
I tried to visit Santa Elena Canyon on the sixth, but was stopped by water across the road (just to the right of the frame in these next two images).

With that road blocked, I headed in the opposite direction from the main fork.

This image set contains some of the few examples I've posted of a processing technique I experimented with back in 2009-2010. I called it "DCS-enhanced contrast", and the idea was to obtain some of the contrast-enhancing properties of Decorrelation Stretch Images without the sensory-overload effect of the colours. I consider the experiment unsuccessful at this time, but thought the results in this case were interesting. Some conventional DCS images are also included for comparison.

At the other end of the main park road (near Boquillas Canyon), I discovered an odd collection of handmade wire animal toys, with a list of suggested donations for each one and a tip jar. Based on the note's contents, apparently some of the Mexicans who live on the other side of the river will sneak across at night to manage their "storefront".
